Diplomatic Appointment: Ambassador to the United States

This afternoon I will recommend to the Governor-General the appointment of the Hon. Kim Beazley AC as Australia's next Ambassador to the United States of America.

He is expected to take up his appointment in Washington in February 2010.

Mr Beazley will replace Mr Dennis Richardson AO, who has been Australia’s Ambassador to the United States since June 2005, and who has been appointed as the next Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Drive against Human Trafficking and Crime against Women to be intensified: Ajay Maken

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Ajay Maken today said that the Government of India in close co-ordination with the various State and UT Governments had intensified measures against Human Trafficking and Crime against women. Shri Maken also informed that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) along with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), will be organizing a workshop for training of trainers of all stake holders against Human Trafficking by the end of this year. The Conference will be inaugurated by the Home Minister, Shri P Chidambaram, he said.

Nigerian National and his wife sentenced in a cheating case

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Tis Hazari, Delhi has sentenced accused Solomon Emeka to undergo imprisonment for one year 2 months with a fine of Rs. 1,000. The accused has already undergone imprisonment, therefore, his deportation order after completion of sentence has also been passed. A lenient view was taken by the court against the other accused Ms. Hellen w/o accused Solomon Emeka. She was sentenced for till rising of court alongwith a fine of Rs. 1,000/-. The court has also directed the accused persons to pay total cheated amount i.e. Rs. 1,13,570/- to the complainant.

Portrayal of the affair between Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, and Lady Edwina Mountbatten, wife of last British viceroy of India, appears to be the cause. India Government officials have asked to scrutinize the script to review how the Nehru-Edwina affair will be played out, reports suggest.
